Look back at the Georgia FamilyHistory Expo

Last weekend passed all too fast, from our arrival in Atlanta on Thursday until our departure on Sunday after the Expo, we were in a whirlwind of activity. Friday morning was spent getting everything ready for the presentations. The vendors were setting up their booths and classrooms had to be set up for sound and projectors. Before we knew it, it was ready to start.

We had an outstanding opening keynote address by Robert S. Davis. His review of the Georgia genealogical resources was phenomenal. We also heard about the recent controversy over closing down the Georgia Archives. A last minute reprieve by the Governor of Georgia barely keeps the facility open for a few more months. One of the first and finest state archives is in danger of being entirely ruined by the  politicians’ lack of concern for records and record keeping even though such is mandated by the Georgia State Constitution. Despite problems with microphones and Internet connections, the Expo went on with interesting and stimulating classes.

We had a special opportunity to have a special guest, Paul A. Adjei. Paul was a delightful individual and gave outstanding presentations. He is CEO at Worldbiz Business. Mr. Adjei lives in Kumasi-Ghana. He collects and preserves oral genealogical data and is currently preserving the history of one of the most powerful tribes in West Africa called the Akan. He manages more than 30 field staff performing research on this tribe.

Reports from all of the other classes and presentations were highly favorable. We went late into the night on Friday and continued again on Saturday. At the closing on Saturday, many of the participants related personal experiences about the benefits they had received by attending the conference in the way of meeting distant relatives and finding valuable information. All in all it was a successful Expo. Thanks to Holly Hansen and all of the Family History Expo staff for another outstanding genealogical event.

Attending the Expo were several of the Bloggers of Honor. You may wish to check out their Blogs for further observations on the Expo. Here is a list of the Bloggers and their Blogs:

We are now looking forward to beginning the next year, our tenth anniversary, with a great Expo in Arizona at the Mesa Convention Center. See you there.
