A Retreat is an entirely different kind of learning experience than attending a conference or expo. Retreats are designed to provide one-on-0ne research assistance and training to genealogists at a specific location. Two of the upcoming Retreats will be held at the famous Salt Lake City, Utah Family History Library. The others will be held a locations where the participants can get first-hand experience in local research techniques and procedures.

Making a trip to the Family History Library can be intimidating. Although there is a huge staff of volunteers at the Library, they are not there to sit with you and help you find the Library’s resources or work through research issues. If you participate in a Family History Expos’ Retreat, you will have classes each day of the Retreat to orient you to your Library research opportunities and teach you basic skills. Then all the participants will have full days at the Library with personalized assistance from research professionals.

Onsite Family History Expos Retreats are a completely different experience. These Retreats are conducted at various locations around the country to give the participants actual hands-on experience in visiting libraries, court houses, historical societies, cemeteries and other locations at a very local level. Every day of the Retreat, there will be classes on various aspects of genealogical research. The idea of the Retreat is to visit an specific location and learn how to do genealogy in the field away from the Internet and large, established repositories. You will find that the experience is well worth the cost and time involved.

Some of the Family History Retreats are attended by people who live in the area and do not have to travel. Other participants come from all over. Either way, the participants learn some very valuable genealogical research techniques and methodology. Both the Library experience and the local county experience can change your perspective and make you a better genealogical researcher.
