Description and Highlights

Come discover what life was like in a bustlting 1840s American city. Nauvoo is one of America's premier historic communities with more than 40 historic sites from the 1840's time period. We will also visit Carthage, historic cemeteries, and more.

NOW is the time to increase your research skills. AND, discover family history in the land of your ancestors! Nauvoo, Illinois is the setting for this dynamic genealogy retreat where you can search the records and feel the spirit of history. 

Wendesday reception and a chance to meet the professionals. Thursday, Friday, and Saturday you will learn how the pros research onsite at local repositories. It is like parachuting in tandem! The pros know the ropes and you are safe in their hands. This retreat will be exceptional and you don't want to miss it!

The cost for this event is amazing and includes 4 nights lodging, 3 meals a day for each day including Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. PLUS, great classes, historic research experience, and walking the paths similar to many that your 1840's ancestors may have experienced in a bustling community of the day. Come enjoy the adventure!

Research Professionals

Arlene H. Eakle, Ph.D. President and founder of The Genealogical Institute, Inc., Dr. Eakle is a professional genealogist with more than 30 years' experience in research, consulting, lecturing, and writing. She has addressed more than 600 conferences, expos, seminars, and retreats.

Dr. Eakle is an expert in tracing families from New York, Southern U.S., British Isles, Switzerland, and parts of Germany. She claims a 96% success rate.

Dr. Eakle writes more than six blogs—Genealogy Evidence (since 2006), Kentucky, Scots-Irish, New York, Tennessee, Virginia and The Kingdoms: England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and the Isles of the Sea. The focus of The Kingdoms blog is on the time period before America was settled, up to 1750.

The Genealogy Library Center, Inc., a non-profit genealogy library established by Arlene and her husband Alma Eakle, will be open to the public: With more than 100 manuscript collections, including a 6 ½ ton collection of English research materials; the Holly T. Hansen United States Book Collection (especially Virginia and Kentucky marriage records); and the Conner-Bishop Book Collection of more than 70,000 volumes.

Something you may not know about Dr. Eakle: She was an ethnic surname consultant to the US Bureau of the Census and the National Archives for the 1990 Federal Census.

Holly T. Hansen President and founder of Family History Expos, Inc., has been instrumental in helping thousands understand the principles, strategies, and sources they can use to trace their roots in today's ever-changing technological environment.

She is the mastermind behind more than 50 Family History Expos, held across the United States, and numerous Retreats at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah, and repositories in diverse cities. She is dedicated to helping individuals and families, one-on-one, with their personal research needs. Currently, she is involved in creating podcasts, webinars, and video presentations to help people move forward in their family history endeavors.

Holly’s titles include author, lecturer, editor and publisher. She has produced more than 100 unique syllabus and class handout books for Family History Expos attendees. Hansen is a former editor of Everton's Genealogical Helper magazine, and editor of the 10th and 11th editions of The Handybook for Genealogists, with more than one million copies sold. She has also authored The Directory of North American Railroads, Trekking for Ancestors, co-authored a series of 16 family history interview books entitled Celebrating and Capturing the Memories and 20 in-depth Research Guides for many aspects of family history research.

Holly and her husband, Chris P. Hansen, have been married for 38 years and are the parents of five remarkable children. Holly received an Honors BA in History from Weber State University and continues to dedicate time to education on a daily basis.
