Productive research happens at the FamilySearch Library research retreat! Increase your research skills and increase your odds for success with our professional assistants.

Class Handouts are included with registration. You will receive a printed copy with your Retreat Packet at checkin. PDF handouts are available for download directly from the website once you have completed your online registration (it is our goal to have handouts posted online within two weeks of your event).

Research Professionals

Arlene H. Eakle, Ph.D. : President and founder of The Genealogical Institute, Inc., Dr. Eakle is a professional genealogist with more than 30 years' experience in research, consulting, lecturing, and writing. She has addressed more than 600 conferences, expos, seminars, and retreats.

Dr. Eakle is an expert in tracing families from New York, Southern U.S., British Isles, Switzerland, and parts of Germany. She claims a 96% success rate.

Dr. Eakle writes more than six blogs—Genealogy Evidence (since 2006), Kentucky, Scots-Irish, New York, Tennessee, Virginia and The Kingdoms: England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and the Isles of the Sea. The focus of The Kingdoms blog is on the time period before America was settled, up to 1750.

The Genealogy Library Center, Inc., a non-profit genealogy library established by Arlene and her husband Alma Eakle, will be open to the public: With more than 100 manuscript collections, including a 6 ½ ton collection of English research materials; the Holly T. Hansen United States Book Collection (especially Virginia and Kentucky marriage records); and the Conner-Bishop Book Collection of more than 70,000 volumes.

Something you may not know about Dr. Eakle: She was an ethnic surname consultant to the US Bureau of the Census and the National Archives for the 1990 Federal Census.
Sharon D. Monson : Professional Genealogist, the founder of GenSearch and more. Author of Shortcut to Genealogy Sources and Beginner Tech Guide. Sharon has extensive research experience in courthouses, the Family History Library, and repositories spanning 30+ years. Her weekly BLOG is helpful for the beginner as well as the experienced genealogist. Sharon is a frequent conference presenter whose classes cover a wide range of sources, methodology, and useful tips. Online genealogy websites available 24/7 present her with a challenge – Search or Sleep? In this case, Sleep never wins!
