This Retreat is not for everyone. But, if you are serious about your personal family history, NOW is the time to invest in becoming the expert genealogist you want to be. You do not have to be a professional genealogist to research like one. This Family History Retreat focuses on details for becoming an expert genealogist. We offer two classes per day along with research at the Family History Library with professionals available for eight hours each day. Your understanding of the records needed to successfully research your family history will increase substantially. After five days of classes followed by time to apply the new skills to your specific needs will increase your productivity and success. Enjoy a full week of research without the many distractions you experience at home. Your week at the FamilySearch Library in Salt Lake City, Utah is one of the most productive investments you will ever make in your family history. Come learn to research with the pros!
Holly T. Hansen :
President and founder of Family History Expos, Inc., has been instrumental in helping thousands understand the principles, strategies, and sources they can use to trace their roots in today's ever-changing technological environment.
She is the mastermind behind more than 50 Family History Expos, held across the United States, and numerous Retreats at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah and repositories in diverse cities. She is dedicated to helping individuals and families, one-on-one, with their personal research needs. Currently, she is involved in creating podcasts, webinars, and video presentations to help people move forward in their family history endeavors.
Holly’s titles include author, lecturer, editor and publisher. She has produced more than 100 unique syllabus and class handout books for Family History Expos attendees. She is a former editor of Everton's Genealogical Helper magazine, and editor of the 10th and 11th editions of The Handybook for Genealogists, with more than one million copies sold. She has also authored The Directory of North American Railroads, Trekking for Ancestors, and co-authored a series of 16 family history interview books entitled Celebrating and Capturing the Memories.
Holly and her husband, Chris P. Hansen, have been married for 36 years and are the parents of five remarkable children. Holly received an Honors BA in History from Weber State University and continues to dedicate time to education on a daily basis.
Arlene H. Eakle, Ph.D. :
President and founder of The Genealogical Institute, Inc., Dr. Eakle is a professional genealogist with more than 30 years' experience in research, consulting, lecturing, and writing. She has addressed more than 600 conferences, expos, seminars, and retreats.
Dr. Eakle is an expert in tracing families from New York, Southern U.S., British Isles, Switzerland, and parts of Germany. She claims a 96% success rate.
Dr. Eakle writes more than six blogs—Genealogy Evidence (since 2006), Kentucky, Scots-Irish, New York, Tennessee, Virginia and The Kingdoms: England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and the Isles of the Sea. The focus of The Kingdoms blog is on the time period before America was settled, up to 1750.
The Genealogy Library Center, Inc., a non-profit genealogy library established by Arlene and her husband Alma Eakle, will be open to the public: With more than 100 manuscript collections, including a 6 ½ ton collection of English research materials; the Holly T. Hansen United States Book Collection (especially Virginia and Kentucky marriage records); and the Conner-Bishop Book Collection of more than 70,000 volumes.
Something you may not know about Dr. Eakle: She was an ethnic surname consultant to the US Bureau of the Census and the National Archives for the 1990 Federal Census.
Sharon D. Monson :
Professional Genealogist, the founder of GenSearch and more. Author of Shortcut to Genealogy Sources and Beginner Tech Guide. Sharon has extensive research experience in courthouses, the Family History Library, and repositories spanning 30+ years. Her weekly BLOG is helpful for the beginner as well as the experienced genealogist. Sharon is a frequent conference presenter whose classes cover a wide range of sources, methodology, and useful tips. Online genealogy websites available 24/7 present her with a challenge – Search or Sleep? In this case, Sleep never wins!
James L. Tanner :
Is a retired attorney and business owner with over 33 years of experience in genealogical research. James was an intelligence officer during the Vietnam War, has a BA Degree in Spanish, a Masters Degree in Linguistics from the University of Utah, and a JD Degree in Law from Arizona State University.
He has nearly 40 years experience as a trial attorney in Arizona with experience in both real estate and probate law among other areas of the law. His expertise is in high demand, he taught classes at the Mesa FamilySearch Library for 10 years. He is currently teaching from nine to eleven hours a week at the BYU FamilySearch Library and training all Missionaries on the floor. He is the author of The Guide to FamilySearch Online.
James is an avid Blogger and his genealogy blog, Genealogy's Star is one of the top genealogy blogs in the US. He has been a presenter at a number of Expos and Conferences. He is the former owner of a retail computer business and Apple Macintosh software company.
