Schedule

April 13, 2015
5:30 pm : Research Fundamentals: Basic Sources with Emphasis on Land and Tax Records to Prove Family Relationships

(All Levels) The terms "Basic Sources" and "Research FUNdamentals" do not mean easy or beginning research. These land and property records prove your family relationships and extend your family lines. You will discover how these Basic Sources link together to build and prove a pedigree: Why chart your evidence as you go through the records? Which property source provides the "purest proof of lineage?" How did your ancestor get his land? How are tax records a genealogy source? Where did your family come from? What if the courthouse burned? These questions and many more are answered in this session.

April 14, 2015
8:00 am : Research FUNdamentals: Proving Family Relationships in US Land and Tax Sources that Link

(All Levels) Learn specific research strategies that speed up your search time and focus your attention directly on the evidence you need to identify and document correctly the individuals in your family history. Make sure you have the correct family members identified for each family group: if you check and re-check the records already searched to see if they have been copied correctly, all you do is prove that you can read. This exercise does not prove your pedigree is accurate. Proof is built line upon line, document upon document. Some attendees at other retreats have said their research and their family trees were changed forever learning how to search and research differently.

April 15, 2015
5:30 pm : Bounty Lands and Other Government Bounty Awards

(All Levels) This class will focus on bounties and benefits awarded for service. Learn how to find them and the valuable information included that proves family relationships.

April 16, 2015
8:00 am : Special State-land States Property Documents

(All Levels) Printed vs Original records-where do you start? Why Maps are essential evidence? Do land grants give the names of parents and other family members? How do you find family property on the ground? And why is it important to do so? Why state property records differ from state to state? What legalities directly impact the evidence in land and property documents: Can a minor own land? What if my ancestor signed a marriage contract? "I have already looked and my ancestor did not leave property to his kids," you tell me. Are you certain? American property records form a complete system of documentation for land ownership and revenue control and this system takes the force of law-transferring ownership and title with or without a court process. Register to attend and learn how answers to these questions and more can bring you success in a week-even for ancestors you have traced for 20 years.

8:00 am : Private Land Records: Manor Records, Plantation Records, Land Holding Companies, and more

(All Levels) This class will focus on private land records with great genealogical value to prove your family relationships. Private control of land and property generates records at all levels of society. These private sources are your best "fire-insurance" safe-guards-if the courthouse burns, these records usually live on. Most of them were never created for the county or town and their survival can fill the gaps. How do you find these sources? This is one of the most important classes of this series. Please come.
